The demise of the first Lincoln Continental was
the result of Ford’s poor financial condition in the post-war 1940s, but
memories of that great automobile lingered amongst adherents for years.
Dealers never stopped pushing for a new Continental, but styling proposals
for what was to be the top offering in the revamped 1949 Ford lineup
failed to gain corporate approval. The ideas for a new Continental
continued to percolate, however. By 1952, Ford’s financial turnaround was
well under way, and another prototype was shown by the newly formed
Special Product Operations committee, which in 1955 was renamed the
Continental Group. Charged with creating the most luxurious,
well-engineered and exquisitely crafted car in America, the Continental
Group finally unveiled the 1956 Mark II. A list price of $10,000 assured
that only the wealthiest could afford the Mark II, a fact that naturally
limited sales, but the Mark II had it all: Lincoln’s 368 CI V-8,
Turbodrive 3-speed automatic, power steering, brakes, windows and seats,
Town and Country radio, wide Whitewall tires and air conditioning . Some
sources list model year production at only 1,325 for 1956 and just 444 of
the 1957, when this timelessly handsome Mark II Coupe became the 17th car
in that year’s VIN sequence. Produced in September 1956, it is now
restored and presents in Starmist White with a luxurious Red and White
leather interior. |
