Ford built five GT40 Roadsters with the original intention to use them for racing at Le Mans and elsewhere in its bid to dominate endurance motorsport. However, the only Roadster to compete failed to finish at either Le Mans or the Targa Florio, so Ford concentrated on the closed version of the GT40.
